Instead of the #CareerServChat topic originally planned for tomorrow (gender-based career decision-making), we will have a virtual roundtable discussion on whether the stages of #CareerDevelopment have any relevance in today's world!

Welcome to #CareerServChat! Please share your name/pronouns, where you work, and answer this question: I think career development models are ______________.

When you look at models created prior to 1980 or so, do you get the sense that changing careers in mid-life is something they even considered? Example: Super's stages are Growth, Exploration, Establishment, Maintenance, Decline. #CareerServChat

Most career development theories were created by academics (not unusual, that's where theories often arise). Do you think there are any theories which are particularly practical? Meaning, theories which are more grounded in real-world experience? Which one(s)? #CareerServChat

There are very few approaches specifically crafted for people whose culture or background is not Western / white / middle class. One I like is focused on the Maori culture indigenous to New Zealand. #CareerServChat

I sometimes feel as if career development theory is really only useful if you have the luxury and privilege of being able to go to college. I'm not sure those without that privilege would find the models and stages useful. Anyone else feel this way? #CareerServChat

Because the format for this "roundtable discussion" was sort of different than our usual, the resources were shared throughout the past hour. I am so grateful to everyone for joining in a really great discussion! So much to digest. Thank you all! #CareerServChat

I have a Twitter list of everyone who has participated in a #CareerServChat. I will add everyone who joined in today. If for any reason you'd rather I didn't add you, just let me know! Here's the list. Subscribe if you're interested, it's a great group: https://twitter.com/LynnCareerCoach/lists/careerservchat…

Our next #CareerServChat Dec. 11 focuses on how career advisors can support international students in their professional development. Our guest host is Angela Vaughn, Director of Specialty Masters Programs at @SmithOCSTerps @SmithSchool. Please RT and join us for a great topic!
